Andrew Crain, Managing Director
"Our experiences as CEOs, family business owners and entrepreneurs give Briggs professionals a unique vantage point from which to successfully guide our clients through the financial, operational and emotional aspects of the transaction process."
Andy brings to Briggs Capital a diverse skillset of transactional, executive and legal acumen, honed through his work as an Investment Banker and his prior experience first as a lawyer and then as the fifth-generation owner and CEO of his family's food manufacturing business.
Since 2005, Andy has provided corporate finance advisory services as an Investment Banker to middle market companies throughout New England, and to food & beverage manufacturers and marketers nationwide. He has originated and executed numerous mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, management buyouts, leveraged buyouts, and private placements of debt and equity of privately-held and financial sponsor-owned companies to public and private strategic and financial acquirers and investors. Andy is experienced in all phases of dealmaking, from valuing businesses to orchestrating confidential auction processes, structuring transactions and shepherding deals to successful closings. Prior to joining Briggs, Andy was a Managing Director at Tully & Holland, a Massachusetts investment bank serving consumer product manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
From 1992 to 2004 Andy was an owner, director and executive at The Whipple Company, the manufacturer of Grandmother's branded, private-labeled and co-packed condiments, fruitspreads and pie fillings. As CEO of Whipple, he grew sales at the century-old company by more than 50 percent by repositioning and rejuvenating the brand, expanding product lines and broadening distribution channels, expanding manufacturing capacity, and building a new management structure and team. Andy led the company's directors and family stockholders through a strategic evaluation including divestiture options and then aggressively pursued multiple buyers for the best strategic and financial fit, leading to a transaction with a strategic acquirer.
Andy began his career in 1987 as an attorney at Foley Hoag LLP, specializing in the practice of corporate law. For five years, Andy represented and advised clients in negotiating and closing many mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. In addition, his legal practice included private placements of equity and debt financings; initial public offerings and securities registrations; and venture capital fund formations and portfolio company investments.
In addition to his professional activities, for 20 years Andy has performed with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus in concerts, recordings and broadcasts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.
Andy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude with highest honors in Economics, from Williams College. In addition, he holds a JD degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School. Andy is a FINRA registered representative with series 7 & 63 licenses.
